The Canadian government has one of the world's most welcoming immigration policies, welcoming about 200,000 newcomers each year. Canada has chosen a different route from other large economies that have attempted to impose anti-immigration measures.
On February 13, 2021, the Canadian government made a historic announcement, stating that through the Express Entry (EE) draw, it had invited a total of 27,332 foreigners to apply for permanent residency. This move was unexpected because Canada typically invites between 3,000 and 5,000 people to apply for permanent resident status.

What is Express Entry?

Express entry is an online system for identifying the best candidates for various Provincial and Federal Skilled Worker immigration programs objectively and automatically. It is not in itself an immigration program.
The Canadian government, through IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada), performs what is known as Express Entry (EE) draws (typically every two weeks), encouraging the foreigners with the highest Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS) to apply for Permanent residency (PR) in Canada.
Express Entry draws are done electronically and are a highly competitive immigration scheme. First, it ranks all eligible skilled foreign workers who have sought permanent residency against one another. After that, the system invites the highest-ranking prospects to apply for permanent residence in Canada. In general, an ideal EE candidate (who has a better probability of getting chosen for PR in Canada) is one who:

  • is under the age of 30.
  • has a Bachelor's or a Master's degree.
  • Is fluent in English or French (or both)
  • Has a minimum of three years of work experience in a skilled occupation

How does express entry work?

Candidates that meet the eligibility criteria must first create an EOI (Expression of Interest) profile in the Express Entry pool. Your candidacy will be graded as per a points system when you fill out a profile. Here is the ultimate guide to how the EE works:

1. Establish eligibility

As stated earlier, you are an ideal candidate for EE if you have some professional work experience, a degree, and possess an excellent command of English or French. In addition, candidates who meet the requirements for the following programs are also eligible to apply for PR via the Express Entry program:

I. FSW-Federal Skilled Worker

The FSW program is designed for those who have been chosen for immigration to Canada based on work skills and work experience. The FSWP is your best EE option if you have never lived or worked in Canada and don’t fall in the category of skilled trades professionals.
To begin the process, determine whether you meet the FSWP's eligibility requirements. After that, you fill out an Express Entry application. Then, based on characteristics such as your education, age, work experience, and language skills, you'll obtain a CRS score.

  • For IRCC to consider you eligible for the FSW Program, you must meet the following requirements:
  • Have worked full-time for not less than one year in the last ten years. The work experience need to be in a National Occupational Classification (NOC) skill level O (managerial occupations), A (professional occupations), or B (technical occupations and skilled trades).
  • Manage to achieve a minimum of 67 points on the Federal Skilled Worker Program selection parameters.
  • Have adequate financial resources money to support yourself and your dependent family (where applicable).
  • Meet admissibility to enter (and eligibility to work) in Canada
  • Attain minimum (English or French) language proficiency. An applicant must submit test results from a certified language test service provider, for example:
❖ IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
❖ TEF (Test d'evaluation de francais) or The French Language Evaluation Test
❖ CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program)

Listening, speaking, writing, and reading are the four areas of language in which candidates are evaluated. A candidate must achieve a CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) level 7 in all four components of the test for English or French, with a maximum score of 24 points.

II. FST-Federal Skilled Trades

The Canadian government established the Federal Skilled Trades program in 2013 to respond swiftly to workforce demands in sectors with substantial economic development but a workforce shortage. First, however, you must meet the FST eligibility criteria.
Who is Eligible for the Federal Skilled Trades?

  • A candidate must have at least two years of full-time relevant work (professional) experience in a skilled trade. Part-time job experience is accepted as long as it covers the same amount of time as the necessary experience. The candidate must have obtained the work experience within the last five years prior to the EE application.
  • Meet the job criteria for your specified skilled trade-according to the NOC regulations-or have a Certificate of Qualification from a Canadian provincial or territorial agency.
  • You must intend to live outside of Quebec.
  • You must take a language test in either French or English. A minimum of five points on the CLB for listening and speaking and a four for writing and reading and writing is required.
  • Proof that you can finance your family and yourself after you move to Canada. But if you are employed in Canada or have a confirmed job offer from a Canadian company/employer, you may not need to provide proof of funds.
  • Proof of admissibility to enter and work in Canada

The following are some examples of FST-eligible occupations:

  • Agricultures and national resources supervision, and related technical jobs
  • Trades that deal with the operation and maintenance (O&M) of equipment butchers
  • Works such as industrial, constriction, and electrical
  • Occupations in manufacturing, industrial, processing, and utilities

III. CEC-Canadian Experience Class

The Canadian Experience Class aims to assist international students and temporary foreign workers in using their educational qualifications and Canadian work experience toward permanent immigration applications.
The CEC supports a switchover from temporary to permanent status. It considers the time spent in Canada by the skilled worker or international student contributing to the Canadian economy.
What are the eligibiity requirements for the CEC Program?

  • An applicant must have at least one year of full-time (or comparable part-time) professional job experience in Canada. In addition, the candidate must have obtained work experience within the past 36 months of the EE application date.
  • Your job responsibilities in Canada must be classified as NOC Skill Level A, B, or O.
  • The applicant must have lawfully gained the paid work experience. For example, an applicant cannot count the job experience gained while enrolled in a full-time mode of education in Canada.
  • Comply with the language standards. For NOC skill codes A or 0 positions, A candidate must achieve a CLB level 7 on a recognized French or language test. For NOC B positions, a candidate must get a CLB level 5.
  • A Canadian address is required. In addition, the candidate must plan to live outside of Quebec.

2. Submit your profile

To be considered for PR through the Express Entry program, a qualified individual must first build a profile with the IRCC. Your age, education, employment experience, language (English/French) skills, and other facts should all be included in your EE profile.
The profile serves as an EOI (Expression of Interest). Each applicant that qualifies is assigned a point-based score depending on how their profile compares to the other applicants in the pool.
People who use the Express Entry system will be required to complete paperwork, just as they would with any other Canadian immigration application. EE is an online application program that requires a variety of documents at various points along the process. You'll need the following documentary evidence to submit your profile:

  • Assessment of Educational Credentials Report
  • Nomination by the province ( (if accepted)
  • The language test's results
  • Travel Documents (passport)
  • Offer of employment (if received)

To become a PR of Canada through the Express Entry program, you must have received an ITA (Invitation to Apply) from IRCC. In each draw, the IRCC establishes a minimum score that candidates must meet to be considered for an ITA.
If IRCC determines that your Comprehensive Ranking Score (CRS) ) is at least the minimum score indicated in a draw and you are among the top applicants, you will be given the option to apply for permanent residency. Generally, the IRCC holds EE draws at least twice per month.
Extra points may be awarded to Express Entry candidates who have received a provincial nomination or have a verifiable job offer from an employer in Canada. It can help them improve their CRS score significantly.

Make a profile in the Canadian job bank (optional)

An applicant who doesn't have a job offer backed by a positive LMIA (Labor Market Impact Assessment) or a nomination from a territory or province can register with Employment and Social Development Canada's Job Bank after submitting an EE profile. The ESDC Job Bank will assist Express Entry hopefuls in connecting with potential employers across Canada.
Applicants are also urged to use other methods to promote themselves to job recruiters, including job boards, organizations, and so on.
Employers will almost always require an LMIA from ESDC when making a job offer to a foreign candidate. The LMIA procedure assures that firms have attempted to hire Canadians for open positions.

Send your permanent residency application.

You should submit your completed PR application to the IRCC if you obtain an Invitation to Apply. You have two months to submit a finalized application after IRCC invites you to apply for PR through Express Entry. The entire application is online, and the system will need you to attach paperwork to support the credentials you stated while building your profile. When drafting your Canadian PR application, keep two things in mind:

  • category of application
  • the Comprehensive Ranking Score.

You must submit documents demonstrating your eligibility for the category for which IRCC invited you. You must additionally prove each of the variables that contributed to your final CRS score.

How does express entry work?

Most of the applications are processed by IRCC within 6 months and on a positive response the applicant can gain premanent residency.

Immigration to Quebec

If you intent to live in Quebec, you should be aware that the province has created its own EOI system similar to Express Entry.
Candidates are also rated using the Arrima method based on the information on their online profile in Quebec's Expression of Interest Bank.
What is the procedure in Quebec?

  • Candidates must complete an online EOI profile to be considered for the MIDI.
  • Profiles are grouped in an EOI pool and compared to one another.
  • There will be two sorts of profiles. One of them is for applicants who live in Quebec or have previously obtained a job offer in the province (and meet specific criteria). The other one is for applicants who do not live in Quebec but meet requirements.
  • Under the QSWP (Quebec Skilled Worker Program), the highest-ranking applicants receive an ITA for a QCS (Quebec Certificate of Selection).
  • Candidates invited for CSQ must submit a complete application within 60 days of getting the invitation.

After receiving a CSQ, approved candidates can apply for permanent residence in Canada.
