As a Canadian permanent resident or citizen, you are free tsponsor your family to live in Canada under specific Canadian immigration laws. The family sponsorship program allows you tdjust that with your family being either an adopted child, siblings, relatives, or any other relative you might have.

The eligible members under the family class include;

  • A dependent child or
  • Conjugal or common-law partner or
  • A spouse or A parent of the sponsor or
  • A person intended tbe adopted by the sponsor or
  • Any other relative that the sponsor might have. (though eligible2 relatives are defined under set regulations that might not appeal to everyone)

Eligibility

For the sponsor : If you don't live in Canada, you are not eligible tsponsor your eligible relatives. However, there include specific scenarios that overwrite this law. They include;

  • If you live abroad but are a Canadian citizen but
  • Are you willing treturn tCanada once your
  • eligible relatives immigrate and
  • When you are sponsoring your conjugal or common-law partner or spouse or
  • Dependent children whdnot have other dependent children.
  • Have a sufficient income that exceeds or meets the minimum necessary income.
  • Make sure you are sponsoring any member of the family class program.
  • Sign an agreement that confirms that both of you understand the outlined obligations and responsibilities.

You will not be an eligible sponsor for the following reasons;

  • Failure in paying child support or alimony.
  • Imprisonment
  • Delayed, missed, or npayments made tcover immigration loans.
  • Bankruptcy declaration and you haven't been declared otherwise
  • Failure tmeet family sponsorship conditions with previous sponsorships.
  • Receive social assistance with reasons other than disability.
  • Domestic, violent, or sexual crimes convictions.
  • You happen to become under a removal order

For the family being sponsored : When migrating tCanada, you need tbe eligible and meet specific requirements for the immigrations program you apply for. For a family relative being sponsored, acquiring a permanent residency entails sticking in Canada for at least 730 days within five years. If not, make sure you fall under the below;

  • Have a Canadian spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, and you are escorting them while outside Canada
  • You are a child accompanying your parents outside Canada

Requirements and responsibilities

As a sponsor, you are required to;

  • Be 18 years old and above and
  • A Canadian citizen or
  • A permanent resident.

If you are an Indian, you should be registered under the Canadian Indian ACT.As the sponsor; you are alsrequired tmeet specific sponsorship responsibilities, which include:

  • Meet the set income guidelines
  • Agree toffer financial support on paper tthe eligible relatives up t20 years from their immigration date. The financial support is dependent on age and the type of relationship between the twof you.

As the sponsored relative : As a relative being sponsored, you are required to;

  • Have an eligible spouse, conjugal partner, or relative whis qualified tsponsor them
  • Have proof of their age, identity, and relationship ttheir sponsor
  • Have subsisting and valid travel documents
  • Come tCanada testablish permanent residence

Sponsor a dependent sibling

Siblings, nephews, nieces, or grandchildren are eligible tbe sponsored;

  • If you are related tthem by either adoption or blood.
  • If all their parents have passed away.
  • When they are below 18 years.
  • When they are not married or single or not engaged in conjugal or common-law partnerships.

A sibling, nephew, niece, or a grandchild becomes ineligible when;

  • One of the parents is still alive
  • One of the parents is still alive
  • Someone else takes care of them while the parents are still alive
  • The location of the parents are not known or
  • The parents abandoned them

Sponsor an adopted child

An adopted child can be sponsored under the following conditions;

  • If the child was adopted outside of Canada
  • If the child is intended tbe adopted in Canada
  • If you, like their sibling or other relatives (niece, grandchild, nephew, etc.), are not a common-law partner or spouse and are 18 and above years old.
  • If you as the sponsor dnot have any other relative such as grandparents, parents, spouse, children, marital partner, niece, uncle, aunt, nephew, or any other relative, whare not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a registered Indian.

Sponsor any other relative

When you meet the below-set conditions as a sponsor, you become eligible tsponsor one relative whis of age and is related tyou by blood;

  • You dnot have any other living relative that you can sponsor like
    • Common-law partner/ spouse/ conjugal partner
    • Children (Daughter or son)
    • Parent or grandparent
    • Orphaned brother, sister, niece, or nephew
  • You dnot have any relatives listed above and whis;
    • A registered Indian
    • A permanent Canadian resident
    • A Canadian citizen

Remember that when you live in Quebec and are approved for family sponsoring, you will have to meet Quebec's family sponsorship conditions.
