Are you looking to study in Canada? With an acceptance rate of about 61%, translating to over 530,000 study permit holders with valid permits in 2020 alone, Canada is among the most receptive countries for students from international jurisdictions looking for a student visa. The visa makes it possible for foreign national students to study in Canada, including conditions that allow them to work while working. Foreign nationals seeking a student visa need to be first enrolled for a program in any designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada before submitting their application to the Canadian visa office that handles immigration issues involving their country of origin.

Student Visa Permit Types

If you have an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution in Canada, you apply for a student's study permit which is a type of Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) allowing you to stay and study in Canada. The main difference between a student visa and a study permit is that the former will enable you to enter the country while the latter permits you to stay in the country for extended periods.

However, if your course is less than six months long, you need to apply for a visitor visa for your request to be accepted. In a few countries, you can speed up the student permit process to an average of 20 calendar days by using the Student Direct Stream (SDS), which also gives you the option of bringing your family along.

Eligibility

For a foreign national to be eligible to study in Canada, the most important document they require is the letter of acceptance to a designated learning institution and an approved study permit. During the application process, which should be around June if you target the September intake, several documents are required to process your Canadian visa request.

The Canadian immigration office requires all study permit applicants to undergo Immigration Medical Examination (IME) from impaneled doctors. Students looking to apply for a permit should conduct a medical exam a week before the study permit application. After the examination, the doctor will send the exam report to CIC.

English language proficiency exam score

Though it's not compulsory, at Pillar Immigration, we highly recommend that you study and take a test on the English language proficiency exam before starting the permit application process. This helps international students to settle quickly while in Canada.

Statement of purpose

When applying for a study permit, you may be required to submit an essay that states the purpose of your visit to Canada and why you have chosen a particular institution. It is an optional document, but we highly encourage you to submit it during the process.

Other factors you need to know.

Apart from documents, you also need to convince visa officers that you will leave Canada immediately after your permit expires. Or, when you complete your studies, whichever comes first, you need to return to your country of origin or apply for an extension on your permit.
