Upon completing studies, many international students decide to extend their stay in Canada or move there permanently. Luckily there are several pathways for international students who want to move to Canada.
Applicants who have any relation or connection to Canada (either by work experience or credentials showing your completion of studies in Canada) get privileges when applying for a permanent residency.
Canadian international students who decide to apply for a permanent residency benefit from some of these, if not all, advantages. To increase the chances for international students to move to Canada permanently, they should never forget to meet the conditions that come with the study permit.

If an international student fails to comply with the stated rules and violates the terms of the study permit, they could risk the chances of ever moving to Canada.

Immigration Programs for International Students

Immigration programs for international students are available in plenty. These programs all operate differently and have different requirements beyond the completion of studies.
We’ve taken the liberty of listing a few programs that will accelerate international student graduate pathways to becoming a permanent resident in Canada:

  • Canada Experience Class : The Canadian experience class is a quick way of obtaining permanent residency in Canada. However, the program considers a few factors: the age of the student, language, and their level of education.
Another requirement is that the student or applicant has evidence/proof showing they have worked in Canada for at least 12 months continuously in three months. Either full time or part-time for a period equivalent to 12 months.
Please note that there is a condition of CEC; experience gained during a full-time study period doesn’t account for the 12-month requirement. Nonetheless, upon graduation, the student is most likely to qualify for a post-graduation work permit.
Once an international student has obtained this work experience CEC (Canadian Experience Class) becomes an excellent immigrating option.
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program : The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW) is also a great option and is considered by international students. FSW, unlike the Canadian Experience Class, doesn't require Canadian work experience.
So, FSW is an excellent option for students who gained their work experience in another country. The program ranks students and invites the highest-ranked students with the best profiles to apply for permanent residency.
A competitive student within the raking system and has met the requirements per the program stands a higher chance of obtaining permanent residence in Canada.
This program also requires the applicants to produce proof of work experience for 12 months of full-time continuous skilled work in any country. Or a period equivalent to 12 months in part-time experience.
  • Provincial Nominee Programs : Every province in Canada controls their immigration program, known as Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). Each PNP is drafted to accommodate and meet the needs of the particular province.
Most of these programs will consider the candidates who have ties to the province first. These ties include; experience gained working within the region and study completed.
An international student can qualify to apply for the program after completion of their studies. But it all depends on the province you're in; not all regions have the exact offers.
  • Quebec Immigration Options : The province of Quebec controls their immigration systems with conditions and policies that work differently from the whole country.
Nonetheless, they are somehow similar to the other provinces of Canada. The programs do have a fair part of advantages for international students who are applying for permanent residency. Below we have listed two of Quebec’s main permanent residence programs.
    • I. Quebec Experience Program (PEQ) : To qualify for this program, you need to have completed your studies in any learning institution in Quebec. Or at least within six months of completion.
Additionally, to qualify, the student must demonstrate proficiency in oral French.
    • II. Quebec skilled worker (QSW) : This program is an excellent option for students who have completed their studies. Or are in the process of completing their studies. Contrary to PEQ, this program doesn't require you to be fluent in French. However, the program requires you to meet the minimum set score on the program’s assessment tests.
  • • Post-Graduation Work Permits : A post-graduation program allows many international graduates to further their stay in Canada after completing their studies and work for any company or employer in Canada.
These experiences help a student to qualify for permanent residence, generally through CEC.
  • • Express Entry : One crucial way to obtain permanent residence in Canada is by applying for an express entry form. This program evaluates candidates through the comprehensive raking system. The system awards students who have studied in Canada, are young, have work experience, and are fluent in either English or French. Many of the students in Canada have these attributes.
Many former international students have been placed to qualify for the Canadian Express Class program through this program. CEC helps hundreds to thousands of international students to obtain permanent Canadian residency every year.
  • Other Federal Programs : Additionally, there is an economic class immigration program. The program provides unique streams for students studying in Canada or with work experience gained in Canada.
Canadian international students who complete their studies have a good chance of extending their stay and finally obtaining permanent residence in Canada. Studying and graduating in Canada puts the student at an advantage when applying for residency.
